Color and brightness (luminance) as perceived by human observers are critical factors in product design, manufactured quality, and operational performance for a broad range of devices and systems ranging from light sources to displays to optical materials. The challenge in developing measurement systems that can quantify color and luminance as perceived by humans is twofold. The first challenge is in Technology: realizing a measurement system that accurately and precisely distinguishes between colors, relative brightness, and spatial relationships. The second challenge is in Application: translating the measurements into meaningful decisions in design, quality control, or performance improvement.

Radiant Imaging’s PM Series Imaging Colorimeters provide precise, accurate measurements of color and luminance

Imaging colorimetry is the core of the Technology solution. Imaging colorimetry allows color and luminance to be measure at multiple spatially related points simultaneously. This is ideal for measuring spatial uniformity, spatial relationships, and contrast; for identify and locating discontinuities and defects; and for assessing or comparing multiple locations on a device or multiple devices simultaneously. Radiant Imaging PM Series Imaging Colorimeters are available in multiple configurations, so that the best fit of measuring instrument to application is always possible. In addition, the PM Series Imaging Colorimeters are extensively calibrated, so they deliver the best possible measurement accuracy and precision.

In addition, for several applications, Radiant Imaging provides additional hardware systems for managing the physical relationship between the device or material under test and the imaging colorimeter to simplify and automate the measurement process. Examples of these devices include our Flat Panel Measurement System (FPMS) and the various models of Imaging Spheres (IS).

Radiant Imaging Application Software automates the measurement and analysis process

Measurements are made to inform a decision. In some cases the raw data is sufficient, but often application specific interpretation is needed. And, in manufacturing especially, multiple repeated measurements may be required. Radiant Imaging’s Application Systems combine PM Series measurement systems with application specific software to provide complete solutions to high-value, complex measurement tasks for light source, display, and material measurement.

Radiant Imaging Application Systems are designed to simplify a broad range of measurement and analysis functions:

  • Characterizing light source near-field luminance distributions using Source Imaging Goniometers® and ProSource®
  • Luminous intensity distribution measurement via IS-LI™ and PM-NFMS™
  • Display production test sequencing with PM-PTS™
  • Display defect detection with TrueMURA™
  • Display color balancing with PM-DCB™
  • Display view angle performance measurement with PM-FPMS™ and IS-VA™
  • Lit keypad and keyboard production testing via PM-KB™
  • LED array production testing using PM-LED™ Test
  • LED video display screen image correction and optimization using PM-LED Correction
  • Scatter and appearance measurement of arbitrary materials via IS-SA™

Each of these applications in characterized by the software integration of the measurement control function and the post-measurement analysis function. For production and field applications the analysis processing is often automated, generating either a Pass/Fail determination relative to user defined criteria or uploading a correction dataset.

By improving light source, display, or lighting system design, by quantifying and automating test processes, or by improving the appearance of a display, Radiant Imaging’s Application Systems can reduce development and production costs, or prolong the value of an existing investment.
